Today, there are many effective over-the-counter acne treatments as well as prescription based options. It is important to note that not all acne treatments work the same for everyone who has acne. What it does mean is that virtually every case of acne can be controlled and those suffering can find relief.
Those people who have mild acne typically have a few blemishes or affect areas. The symptoms may include blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pimples or pustules. Often people can treat mild acne with over-the-counter products, such as facial washes and creams, that you can purchase at your local pharmacy. Typically, those products that include benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as main ingredients will often clear the skin. However, this does not mean that the symptoms of acne will clear immediately.
Despite all of the claims, over-the-counter acne treatments do not work overnight. Do not be fooled by all of those infomercials you see on television. Over-the-counter treatments typically require 4-8 weeks to see any type of improvement. Once acne clears, you must continue to treat the skin to prevent breakouts.
To diagnose acne, we will first examine your skin to make sure you have acne. Other skin conditions can look like acne. If we find that you do have acne, our dermatologists will:
- Grade the acne. Grade 1 is mild acne. Grade 4 is severe acne.
- Note what type, or types, of acne appear on your skin.
- Make treatment recommendations for you based on level of need.
